19 Jarvis Cocker wins Sony Rising Star Award!
Thanks to everybody who voted for Jarvis in the Sony Rising Star Awards. We’re very pleased to announce that he won!
His win will hopefully strengthen the case against closing BBC 6 Music (BBC bosses had previously discussed the possibility of closing the station due to cost cuts).
Of the possible closure he said: “6 Music is never going to be the biggest station in the U.K. but it would be devastating if it was to close. 6 Music isn’t going to change the world – it just wants to make it a bit nicer.”
Jarvis’ Sunday Service show is broadcast on BBC 6Music at 3:30pm every Sunday.

Jarvis,
I have to say I slightly disagree with the comment made above, I feel the show DOES change the world in order to make it nicer,
which, really should be foremost in any station, commercial or independent.Given how generic most modern radio is, it is good that he could raise the bar and still keep the personal/ companionship ethic that is sorely missing from technologically advanced radio. It’s all too easy to just sit there & network, which is sadly the way things tend to run these days, particularly in my country. Bravo for Monday mornings (no pun intended ;)

This week’s show was interesting, not overly keen on drum solos (personal preference) being BRUTALLY honest, there! Good to hear the Sweet – could have mentioned the link with the Timelords (Doctorin’ the Tardis, vintage ’88) however. Amazing how many classical tunes the brain registers – yet cannot decipher, nice hearing ‘MOONLIGHT SONATA’ was beautiful in it’s entirety.
The show was very human, too, with carts competing with the actual voice to the point of hilarity. Short story before 5.30 (UK hour) was poorly timed, would have been good to hear the whole lot. Urban Warrior’s “GREY” is your standard fascinating techno. Funny, but not as funny to me as the Shellac tune :)))))Upon hearing Smokey Robinson, a very prominent sample in dance music was used, near it’s beginning.
Forgot about Janet Jackson’s birthday, and that’s all I’ll say……
A bit of trivia, the Rolling Stone’s ‘OUT OF TIME’ was very faithfully covered by our own JPY (JOHN PAUL YOUNG- LUV IS IN THE AIR). He was a very famous singer in Oz around the ’70s & early ’80’s. Got a new lease of life in 1992’s “Strictly Ballroom”.Even ‘tho it is not my era, I assume the version of “Needle” was done B4 the Searchers.
Don’t forget Russ’s B’day on the 18th – Mr. Senior may be an earthy Taurus, but don’t get on the wrong side of the Bull……….By KARYN BROWN at May 17, 00:40 #

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Pulp’s former guitarist, Russell Senior! (Aussie time!)

Jarvis doing his 1st OB, (Outside Broadcast!)
Sort of….Interesting interviews re TATE.French track ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ (S.G.) is sinister & mystifying @ the same time. Perfect for a Aussie winter morning, (yes, we DO have those – come early).
“COUNTRY LANE” is very nice, (cute ending of ‘SINGING IN THE RAIN’ tacked sneakily on the end there. Synth version of Bob Dylan’s “ LAY LADY LAY” would make great elevator music! Happy Birthday to Gemini Bob!‘ANIMOSITY’ is intriguing to say the least. Lots of indulging overdubs.
Not a big fan of noodly jazz, not sure about the track after the first cross to TATE either, being honest :) It is patchy, let’s say that (“HELEN” – ARIEL PINK.)
The next track won me over for being outlandishly eccentric. Sort of the human equivalent of a dog bark, I could see a bunch of pooches covering this on “RED FACES” (famous segment in Aussie TV show ‘HEY HEY IT’S SATURDAY’;))))))
Dog poem was sweet, made me think of Genie and Roly, my doggies!!! ‘Tho when I look into 4 pairs of eyes, on occassion, they say “I WANT FOOD” , LOL!By KARYN BROWN at May 23, 23:17 #

Finally this week, I thought I’d give you all the oppurtunity to watch a prime example of “RED FACES” brilliance, (& since Jarv likes offbeat cover versions, he should get a kick out of this !!)

It’s been wet & windy, (it would be folly of me to not mention COLD, ‘tho) but nice to hear someone’s warm voice ;) Sunny this morning!
Jarvis has a penchant for French tracks, (nothing wrong with that!) and they are ALWAYS beautiful, albeit scratchy, sometimes, but that can’t be helped, it’s part of a vintage record’s allure.Great band name for the “CHIRO GANG”, lol.
Re Big Ben, never knew about it’s history, interesting. Great quirky brassy track of “BB BLUES” clever twist to news.
‘Embryonic form ‘ statement I found hilarious.
Nice to hear TWEETY & SYLVESTER, btw hope Jarvis enjoyed the above link!Next track is so- so (my opinion!) the bootleg, however is interesting. Where does KUNG FU FIGHTING fit in with a request for Stevie or James Brown?! NUTS!!

My mind recalled ‘LARA’S THEME,’ even ‘tho it was before my time, exquisite.

What to say of this week’s show?
Firstly, football anthem raised my hackles (Oi Oi Oi – Go Schwarzer!!) Also the first track played in the show tied in nicely with proceedings, Prince isn’t my cup of tea, however the slow song was pleasant.
I’ll subconsciously wish him a happy birthday anyway. Interview talking about generation gap was scintillating , songs in the middle “DOMINATOR” & @ the end have suitable “doof -doof” qualities for the club circuit.“SUMMERTIME” by Herb Alpert, I’ve only ever really heard the instrumental version, thanks Jarv! “THE PILL” is spooky.
Ya can’t really fault JOHNNY CASH…. he has the same initials as a certain someone……;)
Finch bird calls are soothing…great lead-in to next piece by the Eels.
I believe your thoughts ARE important on musical tastes, Jarv, ball’s in your court with your segment. Moog piece is curious,
dunno what the purists will say !!!!!By KARYN BROWN at Jun 7, 04:18 #

Ahhhh…. there’s no winter – warmer like Jarv’s show, except maybe a home – made choc pudding coming a VERY close 2nd…..;)))
Lively, bouncy French piece to get le show rolling……nice that u are so diplomatic, Jarv :))) Love Adam & the Ants… they’re my era…..it’s a day off here in Oz (Queen’s B’day holiday) so I am allowed to make a review @ my own pace…good that Jarv actually used his OWN VOICE as well as a cart to prove a point of being live on air.“Shock-headed Peter” history most intriguing, as is Jarvis’ fascination with soccer. BTW we didn’t do well, but rhere’s always next time. TINDERSTICKS piano instrumental kinda reminds me of Barry Adamson’s solo works, believe it or not. 2nd French piece is lovely & quaint, it set my Genie barking, ‘tho! Funny there is a canine reference, maybe she knows something I don’t ;)
BBC “SEASONS” disc still spins me out with it’s northern-hemisphere quirkiness, choral track after news is pretty, cute request that followed. Great sound effect describing the personal account on the “REVOLVER” LP, most amusing. Didn’t know DR. HOOK earned a place in the collection either.Interesting to hear poetry from an un -returned library item (OOH MAA!) We forgive u Jarv :))). Modern French track sounds a little like VISAGE (“Fade to Grey”.)
Unusual lyrics. Nice key change in next song, that’s about the only merit I can really give it. Another great band name ‘tho
“BEAUTIFUL LOSERS.”
ANDREW WK track grabbed my ear, atmospheric, can just pick out cricket noises. He must be classically trained, no? Interview was quite good too. WHERE THE LONG SHADOWS FALL is suitably odd. Haunting, repetitive, mesmerising. 20’s reference.
Fantastic show this week.By KARYN BROWN at Jun 14, 00:08 #

It’s that time again, pretty first song, reminds me of Nick Cave…. LC must have been an influence.. OUR Father’s Day isn’t till September in Oz…….you mentioned the sons, what about the DAUGHTERS, Jarv?????
Speech on animals was captivating by Johnny Morris. Nice surprise that we got to hear ANNE MURRAY – she was a fav of my Daddy dearest, thanx 4 the memories :))))
Clever tie-in with “OH CALCUTTA”, next track is a vast improvement on the last song of his I heard (ARIEL PINK).Amusing recipe recital……4 TET track has a “windchime” vibe about it.
“GUITAR LAMENT” is a sad piece, orchestral piece afterwards very familiar. Kooky KATE BUSH I know well of too – that CD came out in 1993, fact fans. BERLIN WALL and the short story about it poses interesting theories on both FD & the ’80s (the decade I have fond memories of, hem hem!)
BONEY M have always been fantastic, have got their remixes from ’88 (yes!) nice tie – in yet again for UK FD.I am going to deduct a point for Jarv failing to acknowledge our Nic, Sacre bleu!
She was born on the 20th…… could have dragged out COME WHAT MAY……from MOULIN ROUGE. I will explain a shortcoming I had re an above post, where I was talking of a dog poem, I meant to say 2 PAIRS of eyes, rather than 4!
WENDY CRAIG was pleasant – I remember a record she made of spoken word about BEATRIX POTTER. Never heard her sing ‘tho :)Morse code pieces fascinating – ERROL the Tasmanian got a mention, that’s good.
YAMAHA YRS. peice was quite weird…….JC’S version of “Don’t” I have NEVER heard in reggae form.
In the words of great Aussie singer SEAN KELLY (look him up!) “THANK YOU GOODNIGHT”
PS Good Luck 4 Glastonbury :))))))By KARYN BROWN at Jun 21, 08:00 #
